Berber Carpet Tiles

When I was searching for carpet for my living room, I had very few expectations. Mainly, I was looking for a carpet that was light in color (to offset my dark furniture) and for a carpet that wasn’t too expensive. I had used carpet tiles in the past and thought I would use that as a starting point.

I immediately went to my favorite carpet tile retailer, FLOR and began my quest for the perfect carpet. What I found was an amazing carpet tile called Twill Ride, which, it turns out, resembles a Berber carpet. It is this carpet tile that started my love of Berber carpets for home use.

Berber Carpet with a Modular Design Edge

Perhaps the most compelling aspect of carpet tiles is their flexibility. This is both flexibility of size and flexibility of design. Tiles can be configured to any shape or size imaginable, making them perfect for regular rooms, odd-shaped rooms or tight spaces. In addition, tile are easily cut to any shape or size using a standard rug cutter and metal straight edge. In my case, I only needed to fill a rectangular area in my living room, but I have installed carpet tiles in places with odd-shaped angles.

Carpet tiles are not just about sizing. Carpet tiles can be arranged in an infinite number of designs, fitting together like a puzzle in a design made to order. I love that you can have a completely beige carpet, but pop in a couple of bright red tiles to give your room a splash of color. You can also create a checkerboard pattern, stripes, or vary the textures and pile.

Carpet Design

For my living room, I kept the design simple and wanted to try out the Berber carpet effect. The texture of the Twill Ride tiles seemed so interesting and cozy. Sure enough, Twill Ride didn’t disappoint, as the texture adds a lot of interest to my floor, while still feeling cozy on my feet. With a typical Berber carpet design and installation, you have to watch out for seams and make sure that the pattern matches. Berber carpets do tend to be directional (in other words they fit together in a specific way). For a full installation, this can be tricky and manufacturers recommend purchasing extra carpet to make sure you can match the pattern correctly.

FLOR tiles solve this issue easily, which is another reason why I love them. The tiles are placed in a parquet pattern, which actually creates an intentional shift in the direction of the pile. You can easiliy see the seams of the tiles and detect the different in direction…but that’s the point! This shift creates it’s own unique and interesting pattern, making the Berber pattern even more noticable (and lovable.)
